Hailing from the Blue Mountains near Sydney, award-winning Australian solo artist Claude Hay blends slide guitar, sitar, bass and electronic percussion in a unique loop-driven performance. The resulting sound invokes the best of stomping traditional blues and booty-shaking funk, all delivered with chops to burn and a vocal range to match.Claude takes Do-It-Yourself to impressive limits. He built "Betty", his double-necked guitar out of a kitchen bench top; he built his own house from the ground up and even customised his tour van, fitting it out with a shower and recording studio. Claude's musical approach is no different there's just one guy on stage but, with the help of a little modern looping technology, the sound gets built layer-by-layer until people start to wonder where the rest of the band is. Claude has released two albums to date, debut 'Kiss the Sky' (2007) and hook-laden follow-up 'Deep Fried Satisfied' (2010), the title of which was born out of a guilt-ridden love affair with unhealthy food (magnified when touring the US in 2008). Claude's affection for New York-style pizza was the inspiration for the tune 'Get Me Some' which won the Australian Blues Music (Chain) Award for Best Song of 2011. A track about the aggravation caused by a faulty printer 'How Can You Live With Yourself', hit number one on Triple J radios Unearthed chart around the same time.While on a US trip in late 2010, Claude performed live-to-air for the National Public Radio Network. The NPR boasts a weekly listenership of 27.2 million, and 'Deep Fried Satisfied' promptly shot to number nine on the US Billboard Blues charts in response. The album went on to rank number five on Amazons top ten Blues albums of 2010, with track 'Miss You So' polling third in the Best Blues Song of the Year category.Having spent most of 2011 on the road in Australia, Europe and the US, Claude commenced work on the follow-up to 'Deep Fried Satisfied' at the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis (origin of the likes of Elvis and Johnny Cash) to be completed inhis DIY Blue Mountains Studio (after a brief pause to a new cigar box guitar out in the shed).Claude's third album, as yet untitled, is due in mid 2012 and he plans to bring some rock along for episode number three - the new album promising infectious developments in the sound of one Australia's most innovative and unique artists.Best I've heard in a while. Vintage Guitar Feature - May 2011 Claude HayOne-Man Oz Bandis purveying the one-band bandconcept in a unique way with uniqueinstruments. He played all of the instruments on his 2010 release, Deep Fried Satisfied, and performs solo, relying on a homemade doubleneck guitar/bassnamed Betty.The guitarist/singer got into the idea...purely because my band took a break,and the bass player suggested I shouldgo solo until we reformed. I love playingsolo, and in Australia, its a long drivebetween gigs, so from a logistical andfinancial point of view its easier to touras a solo artist. Once you get comfortablebeing by yourself onstage, theres noturning back.Hays twin-neck instrument is interesting,conceptually and constructionwise.Basically, the top half of it is a251/2-scale bass guitar, he detailed.And the bottom is like a baritone. Thebody is an old kitchen bench top that I hadlying around a nice piece of maple butI kind of regret using it now because itweighs a ton!The baritone has Bill Lawrence pickups,while the top has pickups from animport bass Hay had shelved. Theyrenice and old warm Fender copies fromthe 70s.The instrument can emulate thesound of an acoustic guitar, thanks to aL.R. Baggs piezo bridge with a built-inacoustic preamp.I wanted as many sounds and optionsas possible, quickly, on the fly,Hay enthused. Though its a solidbodyelectric, when you plug in the piezo,youd be hard-pressed to tell it from aYamaha APX. It really does sound likean acoustic.Another interesting instrument Hayuses on occasion was a true wall-hangerwhen he acquired it.Its a half-sized sitar I scored froma party in the Blue Mountains, herecounted. It was hanging on a wall, soI picked it up and started playing slideon it. The owner said No one has everplayed that. You can have it. I was soexcited to discover a new sound... newto me, anyway.He wanted to use the sitar live, so itunderwent modifications including newtuners and an EMG pickup.It was originally a bulb-back sitar. Butthanks to the dodgy-ass baggage handlersat airports, it was smashed, so I convertedit to a solidbody. I had to do a gig withit wrapped in gaffe tape, but it survived.And now its a solidbody better live thanfor recording.In the studio, Hay relies on a Maton325 acoustic, but for live gigs he countson Betty and a Yamaha Silent Guitar.He also owns a Martin. While playinglive, his right foot controls his kick drumand snare, while his left foot controls thehi-hat, tambourines, and looping.The title of Deep Fried Satisfied isa nod to American fast food, and themusic reflects an Americana vibe. Asmight be expected from a one-manband, many songs have a thumpingbeat, with slower tunes having a frontporch style, while the faster-temponumbers comes acrossas borderline techno/disco. The openingtrack, Get Me Some,is notable for both its guitarand bass solos, played throughenvelope followers.Im a big fan of envelope filters,Hay said. One of my fave bassplayers is Bootsy Collins theenvelope-filter king! He wasa huge influence on me;the guy has funk oozingout of him.One of the morelyrically interesting songs is Dont GiveMe That, the shout-it-out chorus ofwhich proclaims, Dont give me thats**t! Hay clarified that its actually anoutraged-consumer rip-off declaration,written to recall a used-car purchasegone bad.The sole cover on Deep Fried Satisfied isa highly modified techno-rap version ofQueens We Will Rock You, which hasan interesting vocal mix made to soundlike youre hearing them through cheapradio speakers.If I do a cover, I have to make it myown, Hay explained. If that meansturning it inside out and upside down,so be it.Hay toured Australia to promote thenew album, and did a radio promotionaltour in America in October of 2010. He isslated to return to the U.S. in March, andhopes to check out vintage instrumentswhen he gets back to America.Boy, do the stores there have the mostawesome collections of vintage amps andguitars, he enthused. Armed with a double-necked oddity, a bass guitar and six string in one, drums, tabla, sitar, and biting vocals, he concocts a blues sound that's raw, energetic, and totally unique. Hay mixes the Deep South with Southeast Asia and fries it to a spicy crisp, soul-crunchy comfort food dipped in tangy lunatic sauce. I balked at the first track Get Me Some (it's about food actually, not anything risqué) because Hay's approach is rapid fire and intense, and I was worried I'd be listening to 40 minutes of in-my-face clichéd licks about pizza and tacos. There's no doubt his riffs are classic and he sticks to what works, but his slide guitar (and sitar for that matter) sings. He plays as crisp and tasty as southern fried chicken, especially on the one instrumental track Two Zero Seven. Hay is a solo performer on stage, too. He's a loop artist, which means he records one idea and plays it back on a loop while he adds something else on top. Repeat those steps and pretty soon he could have a whole orchestra of pure Claude style going at once. He brings the instinct for weaving layers of sound and motion on stage to his studio tracks. His unusual sonic palette and sensibility freshen up some old blues grooves. On Don't Forget, an opaque bit of lyrical advice, he blasts away with raunchy guitar and bass, only to swap those for reverberating tabla and sitar amplified to a dirty-blues-guitar sound. The overused Queen classic We Will Rock You gets new life through Hay's frantic, funky performance. Primus has got to be a major influence on Hay. His lyrics about greasy food and buying a lemon of a used car remind me of the eccentric Les Claypool, not to mention his choppy, goof-ball delivery. He does a lot of cool overdubbing with his voice, though. It's layered in sweet harmony on almost every track. The abrasive tones of We Will Rock you melt into an eerie chorus of ghostly singers at the end of the track. His lyrics are mostly fun banter, but Miss You is a heart-on-the-sleeve eulogy for Hay's mom. It's an intense song. Hay reaches way back into roots music for this slow, spiritual work song. He moans its heartache-soaked melody while metallic drums lurch along underneath his voice. I don't listen too much in the roots music genre but I'd bet there aren't too many artists out there who could get away with an original tune in the style of a slavery-era field holler. Hay can pull it off because he sounds sincere and totally unaffected. He has an original sound for sure, killer slide guitar skills, loads of energy, and he is one kooky dude. Page 2 Icon FetchClaude Hay Deep Fried Satisfied (Ingot Records) CD review Australian Claude Hay is a one-man band, who made his own instruments (including his custom guitar/bass twin neck), constructed his own studio, and even built his own house. His music is the audio equivalent of a deep-fried Oreotheres absolutely nothing subtle about it, yet its incredibly irresistible. His CD is aptly titled Deep Fried Satisfied.He accomplishes the one-man thing by a looping machine; he records a short guitar piece, then hits repeat. This is followed by bass, percussion, etc. It sure is fun to watch, but you dont need the video to enjoy his music. Its amazing how a man that lives half way around the world, could make such an American album, from the instrumentation to certainly the subject matter. Itd be easy to label Hays music blues, since his in-your-face slide guitar is ever-present throughout the disc. Yet, his songs are incredibly catchy and danceable. Party blues, with a smattering of funk, might be more like it. As for his guitar playing, youre not going to mistake him for the supple mastery of Derek Trucks per se. No, Claude Hays slide playing has one setting: full-tilt, balls-out boogie woogie. The albums first single How Can You Live With Yourself is so damn catchy, you wont believe its actually about a faulty printer! Hay must have a problem with purchases, because Dont Give Me That deals with him buying a crappy automobile. Both Deep Fried Satisfied and Get Me Some sing the praises of American fast food, something Hay fell in love with on a recent tour. Theres also a brow-raising rendition of Queens We Will Rock You, which turns the stadium classic into a blues stomper. Like a guilty late-night binge, once you get to the end of Hays CD, you might feel a little bloated. But just like that greasy fast food, his music is addictive, and youll be back for more. --Tony Peters

Page 3 LiveGuideFresh back from a promotional tour of the USA, Claude Hay stormed into Sydney for the launch of his latest release Deep Fried Satisfied, and storm he did as the skies opened up in unison with him, flooding the inner city streets. Bringing something a little different to tonight performance, very special guests: The Claudettes, 3 gorgeous ladies lending their vocals, cello, violin and keyboard to the soul storming funk blues of Claude Hay, opening the set with the first track from Deep Fried Satisfied, 'Get Me Some'.While the live loops revolve and The Claudettes sing, Claude leaves the stage to hand out freshly delivered hot pizza to the packed crowd upstairs at the Sando, with all the pizza boxes soon empty Claude jumps back up on stage and begins his part of the song, his bluesy slide guitar screaming and singing, while he delivers the lyrics of his love for all that is junk food and the king of his love PIZZA The room erupts as there is so much atmosphere in the room tonight. Its not really surprising, a Claude Hay show is about having a great time.Claude is so full of life, its infectious, theres no rock god ego even as he has just returned from the US where he played live on radio to 14 million listeners.Claude is truly appreciative for the support his fans and friends have shown him, and that is something rare from musicians in this day and age. As he laughs with the crowd, sharing a few jokes and lifting everyone spirits, every single person is smiling from ear to ear. Claude soon rips into another song this time using his bastardised electric sitar he made himself, the floor is breathing from all the feet jumping and dancing. Time for a cover, a reworked version of the Queen classic We Will Rock You, the tempo is kicked up and ripping and the slide playing sitar is howling, the kick drum is thumping and you can feel the passion flowing from the stage. Im supposed to tell you all about the new cd thats for sale tonight, but Im not going to mention it Claude cheekily chuckles into the mic, Lets keep the music going he quickly adds as he brings The Claudettes back to the stage. Claude introduces the next song Friends, a title that to me speaks volumes of the mans integrity; he clearly does not take his friends for granted.Throwing in a personal joke with a close friend in the crowd Claude sets up his live looping for the song. The great thing is the fact that he doesnt take forever to set up each song, building the live looping layers extremely quick at the beginning of each song, so theres no loss of attention from the crowd nor of the buzz of excitement in the room. Song after song, Claude never misses a beat nor loses a single person in the crowd, whether he is joined by The Claudettes or hes funking up the stage on his own - the room is pure electric. With live loops, kick and snare drums, djembe, sitar, baritone guitar and of course Betty his home-made double-necked guitar, all played live, the only way to describe in words what its like seeing Claude Hay live is - Freaking Amazing! If you havent seen Claude Hay play then all I can say is you are missing out on something quite unique and brilliant, and between now and when you see him I strongly suggest you get your hands and ears on a copy of Deep Fried Satisfied right now.

How Can You Live With Yourself has a strong North Mississippi Allstars feel with vocals and guitar moaning in unison this influence being melded with elements of Canned Heat on Deep Fried Satisfied (a paean to fried food), whilst recalling the classic Tobacco Road on On Hold. If Freddie Mercury had been born and bred in Como, Mississippi, he would probably have sounded just like Claude Hay does on this wild rendition of We Will Rock You Friend has Hay sounding like a hill country version of the Stones Two Zero Seven melds elements of McDowell, Bongo Joe and Mississippi John Hurt Dont Give Me That melds Burnside and Bo Diddley whilst Dont Forget with its pulsing bass lines and slide recalls Canned Heat permeated with Ian Siegal.That leaves Miss You So which has strong spiritual overtones, which with its humming sounds like a Fife and drum recording (without the fife) and the drums permeated with shades of Sandy Nelson.If you like Burnside, Kimbrough, North Mississippi Allstars et al then this set is for you.(www.claudehay.com.au)Rating 8- Mick Rainsford

Cuando recibí información de su disco, pensé que se trataba de un DJ, pues hablaba de loops y otras cosas. This could define the Australian artist Claude Hay. When I received information from his biography, I thought it was a DJ, he spoke of loops and stuff. Then, when I received the CD and I noticed he played every instrument I learned that there is a clear example of "do it yourself." First, because Claude makes his own instruments, and second, because the sounds all at the same time, all thanks to the loop pedals and a drum machine for percussion. The result is slide-blues with some cool funk entering, 11 songs in 40 minutes with a very interesting version of "We Will Rock You" by Queen. This is a great attempt on his second album, which puts him in a high point in the creativity of the blues and, incidentally, shows that in Australia we are doing things with quality.

Here, for instance, he plays twin neck guitar, sitar, bass and drums, with female backingvocals on the title track the only other accompaniment. He comes up with a surprisingly full-blooded sound, featuring some fiery guitar and good-natured vocals and lyrics. The tone is set with opening cut "Get Me Some," a declaration of Hay's love for NYC pizza ("I hear a pizza call, I'm gonna get me some of that"). The theme continues on the titlesong, detailing his addiction to greasy fast food, while the funky "How Can You Live With Yourself?" bemoans our dependence on disposable technology. It's good to see Hay avoid clichéd blues themes. The onlycover is an almost unrecognizable, but fun, up-tempo take on Queen classic "We Will Rock You." This will go over well at a boozy BBQ for sure. Making of Betty BEHIND THE LINES WITH MICHAEL SMITH DRUM MEDIA 9TH February 2010Hay Making BettyYouve probably all seen those great double-neck guitars that that seemed to be all the rage in the 70s as played by Jimmy Page and the like. Well, Blue Mountains-based blues and roots sol artist Claude Hay found that the sort of thing hes doing required something along the double-neck line but couldnt find it, so he built his own and named it Betty.Basically, Hay explains, the top half of it is 25 ½ scale bass guitar so its a guitar size bass and the bottom part is like a baritone guitar. Because theyre different scale lengths I couldnt really get anything readymade and Ive made guitars before since I wanted something sort of custom with all the different specs on it that I like.The body Is an old kitchen benchtop that I had lying around, a nice piece of maple, but I kind of regret it now because it weights a ton! Because of all the looping I do I wanted all the strings on a bass and all the guitar strings as well, and its also kind of an acoustic guitar as well. Ive put an acoustic Piezo LR Baggs bridge with an acoustic preamp built inside as well, so I can switch it from an electric to an acoustic to a bass. I wanted as many sounds and options as possible quickly, on the fly. Though its a solid body electric, you plug the Piezo in and youd be hardpressed to tell it apart from a Yamaha APX live it really does sound like an acoustic. For the electric side of things, I just used Bill Lawrence Stratocaster pickups, and I had an old Japanese bass I never used and pulled the pickups out of that, which are sort of like P-style pickups, just nice and old warm Fender copies so to speak but from the 70s. There was a lot of fiddling to work out all the scale lengths and where the best spot was to put things, because I couldnt find a 25 ½ inch-scale standard-tuning bass on the internet, and I also really had to experiment with string gauges to find the right gauge, but its great. Its all I mostly use now because I can get so many sounds out of it. Stringswise I ended up using 60s and 120s on the bass side, while the baritone electric side is actually quite different. The A string is actually D, and the E string actually has a bass string. So its an octave below that again, so when I do the looping if I stop into a midsection I can sill play a little bass as well. So its very low and unusual tuning and Im getting my head around how to play it!More importantly, Hay not only had to transpose a lot of his old songs in order to play them on Betty but has written his forthcoming album , Deep Fried Satisfied from which his latest single How Can You Live With Yourself is taken. He'll be launching it al Raval on Saturday March 27.
